Overview

Transport Cask

The 1860A was designed to move new sources for uploading into radiation therapy equipment and the return of depleted sources for disposal.
Due to the limited styles of transport packages available, the flexibility of the drawer concept has been expanded with a suite of drawers to enable movement of a variety of sources and isotopes in a range of styles and capsules. Drawers for the movement of multiple orphan sources to a repository can be developed for specific applications.

National and International Regulations

The 1860A was The 1860A Type B(U) Package has been designed to the requirements of

  1. The Code of Practice for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials Radiation Protection Series No 2 Issued by Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency.
  2. International Atomic Energy Agency regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials 2005 Edition (TS-R-1)

Description

The 1860A package attenuator is a cylindrical section with conical ends, surrounded by a crumple shield constructed from fins covered with a mesh which is designed to collapse in the event of a transport incident. All material of construction is 316 stainless steel. The attenuating material is a combination of lead, tungsten and stainless steel.
The end crumple shields are removable to allow close coupling of the package to other devices to facilitate transfer of the isotope.
The isotope is carried in a drawer that fits centrally in the package. The drawer is sealed by end-caps that contain a sampling port.

AMSA (Australian Marine Safety Authority) for sea transport AUS/2007-13/B(U)-96
ROSATOM RUS/5619/B(U)-96T

Certificate of approval is for Solid Special Form Material.

Drawer System

The radioactive material to be transported is placed in the centre of a drawer which fits into the drawer cavity of the package, the drawer is accessible from both ends.
Configurations A, B, C & D accommodate 64mm round drawers, configurations E & F accommodate 75mm square drawers.
